I was sitting in the staff room yesterday, and overheard a couple of the primary teachers talking about the hundredth day of school. Often times, teachers of younger students keep track of how many days of school we've had, celebrating that pinnacle hundredth day. One hundred days of school marks something more than that, it marks the half-way mark for the school year (or pretty close). It is truly remarkable to look at what we have accomplished as a class thus far. And, I am so very excited about our second semester and all that we have yet to do.
Next week, students only come to school Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday, all the teachers at MRA will be working hard to complete report cards for our first semester. This is a change from years past. In the past we've worked on a trimester schedule, having three grading periods in a year. With semesters, there are two. We are also using a new system for report cards, syncing our grading system, Jupiter with our report card.
Please remember, homework packets came home today. This packet will be due Friday, February 6th. Note that there are two weeks worth of reading logs in this packet.
We have spent the last two and a half weeks learning about research papers. We've had lessons on finding good sources, lessons on note taking (and plagiarism), lessons on outlining. Now, we are ready to select topics. Students have the opportunity to choose virtually any topic related to one of the three Pre-Colombian civilizations of Mexico, South, The Aztec, Inca, or Maya.
